2012-01-23
Bibi without coat however with cap in cold Finland. Bibi was one of the dogs, which could bring themselves in the summer 2010 before the large fire in security. She fled into a hotel to a Finnish family. In the summer 2011 Bibi began then its journey to Finland and lives now at Maarit and family. MANY THANKS OF US!!!

Sadly enough, still animal abuse on Samos
2012-01-14
Although ACS is giving their best every day to avoid animal suffering, still not every dog owner treats his dog in a normal way...

Farida, this week's pack leader on Samos!
2012-01-14
As Tom and Ingrid are in the Netherlands this week, our die hard ACS-volunteer Farida is running the shelter on Samos. The first few days even all by herself and now the volunteers Pieter and Inco are also there to help. Farida has been working as a volunteer for ACS since the very first beginning and therefor we would like to poke fun at her in this piece of text, because the pictures tell us that there is a lot of rain at Samos at the moment.

Farida, thanks again!

ACS makes the difference, you can ask Aslan!
2012-01-14
Take a look at the pictures that Farida has made of Aslan!

Christmas donation collection Food Store Moers is a great success!
2011-12-17
Food Store Moers has made a donation collection for animal shelters, including Animal Care Samos. Two great donators of ACS, Karin and Roger, came up with this great idea for Christmas. The store has set up a large Christmas tree. In this tree the photos of 20 Samos-cats and 20 Samos-dogs were hung up. On the backs of the pictures they wrote down what kind of things these animals need. The customers look at the pictures, take them off, look at the back of the picture, buy the gifts needed, and then put them under the tree!

Customers always ask whether the gifts really do go to Samos. The man in the store always confirms ‘Of Course’. There is always a truck that drives back to Samos with the goods and gifts for the shelter. The collected gifts from this Christmas donation collection will be brought to Samos with the next transport in January 2012, when Tom & Ingrid go back to Samos after their short visit in the Netherlands. Of course, at that time we will put some pics of the transport on the website, because customers of the food store want to know and to see that their gifts will arrive on the right place.

ACS would like to thank Food Store Moers and Karin & Roger for this great action and great idea!

Merry Christmas to you all from the animals of Samos.

Merry Christmas and a happy new year!
2011-12-11
ACS wishes all their donators, their volunteers and all animal lovers a merry christmas and a happy 2012!

Received 1600 kg cat food from Holland
2011-12-05
On a late Saturday night we got a call that a large amount of cat food was offered. Definately, this had to be picked up the next day before 13.00 hours in the Netherlands. Fortunately, Tom was coincidentally with the Transporter in Amsterdam and he, together with his two sons, has picked up 1600 kg cat food and some dog food in Rotterdam quickly. A large proportion of that is now already on Samos. In this way, the private places can easily be preserved in wintertime. We thank Melanie Reismann for her mediation and we thank Tom and his sons for their spontaneous action.

Cat castration program
2011-12-05
Early October 2 veterinarians from Scotland were on the island Samos. In 2 days, cats from the village Ormos were castrated. In also 2 days, cats from Kokkari, Vathi and 3 she-cats were present from the mountain village of Ampelos.

A total 127 cats were castrated in a periode of 4 days and some more were medically helped.
The action was organized by Iris Korfer with her newly founded club cathelp Greece.

www.kattenhulpgriekenland.com

Many thanks and love to all volunteers who have contributed to this great performance. Especially thanks to the veterinarians Juliette and Alan for your super conscientious work. We hope that you will come back next year.

Further targeted neutering campaigns are planned for next year.

Noah, Boy and Madam all rehomed in Holland
2011-11-01
It's amazing, but in such a short period after our text on the website it did happen...the three beautiful pussycats found a home in Holland. Madam is now living in a little place called Zwaag; Boy and Noah in a place called Dongen.

Thank you very much. Maybe we get some news from their new families soon, so that we can inform you in 'success stories'.

ACS thanks GAR for their amazing support every year!
2011-11-01
Vesna from Greek Animal Rescue (GAR) visited our shelter on Samos on the 24th of August for a three days'stay. Every year she visits shelters in Greece for a couple of days to see how the shelters are doing (and to cuddle the dogs/cats of course). Without the support of GAR it would not be possible to exist for a lot of Greek shelters (including ACS).

A few months earlier, in May 2011, we also welcomed Titch from GAR on our shelter for some days. She helped a lot on the shelter. And the love of the GAR-volunteers for the animals is always heartwarming.

We can not show our appreciation for GAR enough...thank you very very very much for your support!

We hope that you will and can continue your support to ACS in the future as well. Only then we will be able to continue our help to improve the lives of the animals on Samos.

Greetings to all the volunteers and the financial donors of GAR!

Vets are voluntary giving their best for the animals of ACS
2011-11-01
In 2010 and 2011 a lot of vets visited our shelter again to help the animals with naturing and other medical support. We show you some pictures of some vets in action.

Hereby we would like to thank ALL the vets and their assistents! Hopefully, we can welcome you again at our shelter in the near future.

Keep on doing this great job, please!

Cats
2011-08-21

Nochmals DANKE !

Obituary Lola (+ 12th June 2011)
2011-06-26
With great sadness in our hearts we must announce that Lola is recently deceased.

Lola had just got a nice new lawn to eat from it. When Gabi arrived at Lola's place, at Whit Sunday, for their usual daily morging walk, she could not find Lola. After an intensive search, she saw Lola lying. Most probably Lola got off balance while standing up, thus stumbled and then fell down a bit. She could no longer stand up by herself and she was in shock. In her fall her back was broken and the prospect of recovery was hopeless. On the vet's advice Lola was released out of her misery. Dimitri and Gabi made a nice big tomb for Lola with an excavator. It was finally getting better with her and then suddenly this ... she's a real unlucky.

We hold on to the memory that at least Lola had a happy last month of her life with real love and care.
Rest in Peace, Lola. You have deserved it. We will miss you and we will never forget you.

Veteran Bobby gets a makeover and stays at the shelter
2011-06-15
Bobby arrived at the shelter as an old dog with overweight and a huge tuft of hair. Since then Bobby has been through a makeover. 'Hairdresser' Ingrid modernized Bobby's hairstyle to the latest fashiontrend in Samos (a 2011-haircut): lower short and long on top! Bobby moves more, eats less and now has the body of a young god.

The Greek woman who owns Bobby informed ACS, through her children, that she is no longer able to take care for Bobby properly. She is old. She had recently been in hospital to get an eye surgery and she can not see well. Her children are afraid that their mother can not see Bobby with the danger that she could fall on Bobby. They have asked ACS if Bobby could stay at the shelter permanently or could find a great adoptive family for him. The Greek woman, together with her son, visited the shelter to say goodbye to Bobby in person. She cried a lot because she has had Bobby since he was a little puppy. Bobby did wag at her with his tail, but meanwhile he already feels at home at the shelter. He plays, is enthusiastic and he has never looked this great before. Look at the pictures!

Regards, ACS.

Voluntary vets neuter, sterilize stray dogs/cats and also take care after Lola's teeth!
2011-06-13
Last week, two veterinarians and one assistant from the UK visited Samos on a voluntary basis during an eight-day stay at Animal Care Samos. Emer,Jon and Carol have among others neutered/sterilized stray dogs and stray cats and helped with medical care. They also treated Lola's teeth. Lola needed this very badly, because she is now able to eat easier.

ACS thanks Emer, Jon and Carol for the great work they have done last week for the stray animals on Samos!

ACS purchased a new bus for transportation of stray animals
2011-06-02
Recently, ACS had to buy another bus for the transport of strays. The former was already 13 years old and already worn. The bus is a big Renault Master from 2005, which because of its volume is very suitable for the transportation of stray animals. Renault Amsterdam was willing to sell this car to ACS with a nice discount including maintenance in the coming years. For this, ACS wants to thank Renault. Fortunately we can now move forward with our help!

ACS thanks the Vocational Westfriesland/location Hoorn for great donation
2011-06-02
For Wednesday, February 16, 2011 the Vocational Westfriesland had organized a skating competition for the pupils of the school. The pupils have used super by themselves, prior to the skating competition, to find sponsors who wanted to sponsor them per lap skated. All proceeds would benefit the ACS. The performance of the students went beyond all expectations! The beautiful proceeds will be used by ACS to build and furnish an operating room at the shelter in Samos. The first phase of construction is already under way and the foundation is put. Everyone from the school, and especially the students, many thanks for your great efforts!

Good luck Sanna
2011-05-10
Sanna has been helping at the shelter for quite some time now but unfortunately she is leaving us. We would like to thank her for her efford and help at the shelter and wish her all the best with her new job!

Is it really gonna happen?
2011-04-13
Since the very beginning of the shelter of Animal Care Samos water and electricity was a problem.

The fire brigade is kind enough to help out with filling the watertanks.
But for electricity the shelter is always depending on a dieselgenerator.

When the township was rebuilding the new rubbish-dump they told the volunteers that in the future there would be water and electricity for the shelter as well.

And now it seems to be really happening! There is a line to the shelter now it's just waiting for the electrician to install everything in the shelter.

This is great news and we can't wait!

Peter helping us, and bringing us a lot of donations
2010-12-05
In July Peter came for 14 days to Samos, like before, to help at the shelter.
His presence was important because the veterinarians from the UK and Ireland came to do a neutering campaign, starting a few days after Tom had left to Holland.
There was a lot to do.
One day Peter wanted to fix some kennel floors, because they were getting in a poor condition. Because we didn't have a good concrete mixer, Peter wanted to buy one as a donation, from his holiday payment!
THANK YOU PETER!

In the evening we started to gather stray cats from Ireion and Hora, which were sterilized the next day.

The time flew by and very successful and helpful for our shelter!

Thank you!

September 2010

In September 2010, Peter arrived again, this time with an overloaded truck to Samos and brought the long-awaited food, medicine and many more medical aid to us.

We would like especially like to thank the lovely woman from the Bielefeld area
Thank you for the generous food donation to Animal Care Samos or Samoshilfe Germany e.V.

The donation has a very big benefit for us, especially since the dogs and cats need some high quality food, which the shelter normally doesn't get.
Best wishes from us to Bielefeld!

November 2010

In November 2010, Peter undertook a another trip to Samos. Peter picked up Anna from The Hague, who had worked before for months as a volunteer at the shelter. This time Anna will stay until the beginning of February 2011.
Peter is on Samos until 22 December and comes again in the end of January, to take Anna back in February 2011.
Both Anna and Peter have work at home, but sacrifice for the period on Samos on all holidays and overtime. Anna and Peter both know that it is important to come on Samos, so that Tom and Ingrid get the time to go back to Holland for a little while, after working eight months at the shelter.
There are many small repairs to do at the shelter, after a busy summer. Winter is the best time to do this.
Peter and Tom are the main maintenance men of the shelter. Tom is even call Peter affectionately "Hobby-Bob".

The truck was, as always overloaded with food and urgently needed and high-quality trinkets used in operations.
We owe THANKS for these items to the donation of the Animal Protection Association Neuss e.V.
These included for example, a new sterilizer (the old one after years of use stopped working), surgical instruments such as scissors, clamps, scalpels, sterile drapes, bandages, sewing materials and testing devices, everything that is needed when we get volunteer vets to come over for nutering-campains.

When we unpacked the things in our surgery-room, we were impressed by the abundance and
usefulness of the materials, for our purposes, and feel deep gratitude for the donation.

We send friendly greetings to Neuss (D).

Donations from Finland
2010-12-05
Donations from Finland

During this summer, we got several donations from a discussion board in Finland.
These donations started a few years ago, when one of our volunteers started a fundraiser (of materials, not money) on the discussion board and a lot of people wanted to participate. At that time, the donation was approx. 650 kg! Which the volunteer brought to Samos by plane, on two different occasions.

Over the last couple of years, many people from this discussion board have gathered a lot of different types of materials for our shelter, including medicines, food, surgical materials, toys, collars, jackets for dogs, beds for dogs and cats etc. This year most of this material was delivered to us by mail, but also some by people who travelled to Samos on holiday, and who volunteered to take the materials to us.

Most of these nice people who have donated so much, have never visited our shelter, but think that we do a good job and want to support us in any way they can.
And, some of these people have also found their way to Samos, just because of curiosity towards the shelter.

This year, through this discussion board, we also got a very big donation of food! Now there is a little over 800 kg of this food in Germany,
and in January, more of the food will make it's way to Germany and from there, to Samos. Also in this donation, there will be catfood.

We would like to thank all the people who have participated in these collections, and also the people who have organized them, Tarja and Miska.
A special Thank You also to the truckdriver Hannu and the organizer Erkki, for the transport of the foods to Germany.

A BIG Thank You from all of us, and our furry friends!

And the same in Finnish...

Lahes sama Suomeksi:

Tana vuonna olemme saaneet useaan otteeseen lahjoituksia Suomesta, suomalaisen keskustelupalstan kautta. www.lemmikkipalstat.net on edesauttanut meidan tarhaamme jo muutaman vuoden ajan, silla siella on Paivan Peili osiossa ollut "Hyva Kiertaa Samoksen koiratarhalle" kerayksia, joihin on osallistunut hyvin suuri maara ihmisia.

Jo pari vuotta sitten oli ensimmainen kerays palstalla pystyssa ja siina keraantyi erinaisia tarvikkeita yli 600 kg. Oli laakkeita, leikkaustarvikkeita, leluja, pantoja, hihnoja, herkkuja jne.jne. Nama tarvikkeet tuotiin Samokselle kahdessa erassa, lentokoneella.

He ovat ansioikkaasti saaneet meille aivan mahtavia paketteja!
Suomesta on myos saatu suuri ruokalahjoitus, yli 800 kg Nutron ruokaa koirille!
Tammikuussa olisi seuraava ruokalahjoitus tiedossa, joten saamme ruokaa kaikenkaikkiaan lahes 1500 kg. Seuraavassa toimituksessa mukana myos kissanruokia.

Tama on hienoa!

ISO Kiitos meidan, seka karvaisten ystaviemme puolesta!

Fires that threatened the shelter
2010-12-04
In July we had two forest fires, which threatened the shelter. The first was on the left side of the shelter. It had been started by three local boys. When looking from Samos Town towards the shelter, it looked like the fire would be directly at the shelter.

This really frightened us and immediately we jumped in the van and started to the shelter. But of course the road had been blocked, and we had to detour a longer route. But luckily, the fire was not close to the shelter, and the wind was blowing also the other way.

Many people called us and showed us how much they care! They offered any kind of help we might need. But this time, we were lucky and didn’t need help, since the fire stayed away.
Just a little over a week later, there was another fire, also started deliberately. We got a call during the night, saying that the there is fire at the shelter! We immediately took off again and drove to the shelter. The fire was not there, but we could smell it. We drove to Kokkari and saw the fire. It was spreading up, towards Mitilini.

In the morning we made preparations for evacuation of the dogs. We uploaded kennels on a trailer and counted a place for 30 dogs on the trailer. We also had two vans, which would have fit approx. 15 dogs each, so we counted that we have a place for transporting all the dogs away from the shelter if necessary. A friend of our volunteers told us that she has a place which is fenced around, in Kalami, where we can evacuate the dogs, if it comes to that. The day went by, watching the planes fly over us and trying to put out the fire. We could clearly see the flames, just over the ridge, a few kilometers from the shelter. We were really worried, because if the wind would change, it would push the fire right to the shelter!
One of our volunteers stayed the night at the shelter, keeping watch. In the meantime the other volunteers tried to sleep but that was not really happening, they were sleeping with one eye open, waiting for a call from the shelter, if we need to evacuate. At five the volunteer called the house and said that the fire is calming down, no need to evacuate.

This was a very stressful time for the people but also for the animals. You could see a change in their behavior, they were more nervous and at the same time, more quiet.
Many animals died in these two fires. Dogs that were left behind in chains, also farm animals that were left behind. We got one dog to the shelter, which had been rescued from the fire. She had escaped by herself and found her way to a hotel, were a Finnish family found her, bathed her and fed her. They brought her to the shelter, saying how she had started shaking in the car as they had passed the areas that were most affected by the fire and still smelled smoke.

Later there was a third fire on Samos, in Votsalakia. This fire didn’t threaten the shelter, but it destroyed a lot of nature, killing also wildlife. Two dogs were rescued from this fire and we picked them up from Votsalakia. Both are now living new lives in Germany.

The Story of Hope
2010-11-17
The story of Hope

It was a sunny morning in the beginning of June, when Tom and Ingrid were driving to the shelter.
There was some traffic on the road, as normal…
As they were driving along, they noticed something in the middle of the road. It was a dog. A skinny pointer was lying in hole, in the middle of the road. Traffic is passing, nobody stops. He is lucky, they at least passed him, not hitting him with their cars.
Tom and Ingrid stop, go slowly to the dog, to see if he is ok. They are able to take the dog in the car and bring it to the shelter.

This skinny little creature, barely skin and bones, has a look in the eyes that say he has given up hope. He let’s us do what ever we want with him. Of course, we want to help.

Hundreds, if not thousands of ticks cover him. We treat him with frontline and the ticks start literally raining off him. We give him deworming and start him on a light diet (chicken and rice), so that his body will get used to food again.
We had to start slowly; giving only handful dosages five times a day, so that his body will digest the food. We also added raw liver in his diet, since his blood cells were very low and he was severely anemic.
For the first few days, he was mostly lying in his kennel, under a warm blanket. His hair and skin started to fall off from his back and his legs. We put sun block 50 cream on him, so he doesn’t get severe sunburn.
He seemed very grateful and happy to get treated well, get food and fresh water. He seemed to gete a new look in his eyes, the look of Hope.

After a few weeks, you could see a difference in him. He was gaining weight and looked much better. We took him to the front of the shelter, so he can start spending time with other dogs. He loved it!
We tested him for leishmania, and kept our fingers crossed. His first result was questionell.

Day after day he got more playful and energetic. We placed him on the field, where he has even more doggie friends to play with. In the beginning he was a little protective of food in the field, but as soon as he realized that there really is enough food for everyone, he didn’t mind anymore. Now he has friends and is loving his life.

Hope is healthy and playful, loves to be cuddled by people and all in all seems to be a very happy dog, which is a miracle, after the way he was in the beginning, only days away from dying.

We have taken another test for leishmania, and this time the news was not so good, the result was positive.
This is still not the end for Hope, he is treated for Leishmania and we hope that some day, a special someone will see the same spirit we see in Hope, and give him a good home.

Donations for the Shelter
2010-10-04
The German organization Tierhilfsnetzwerk Europa (www.tierhilfsnetzwerk-europa.de) has provided us with a collection of urgently needed items for our shelters. food, towels, leashes and collars, transport kennels and much more has safely arrived on Samos last week.
We'd like to thank in the name of our animals!

Scalibor-necklaces for Samos
2010-06-16
Our call for donations of Scalibor necklaces for the dogs on Samos was a big success.
We could collect 13 necklaces and 1100 Euros.
So we could hand over 85 necklaces in total to our helpers on Samos, Ingrid, Sanne and Tom.

We and the dogs like to thank all donators!

Thank you WVS
2010-06-11

THANK YOU WORLDWIDE VETRINARY SERVICE!

Over the years WVS has sent us variaties of donations like antibiotics, literature on animal health, tools that help us tend to our dogs and cats, etc. etc.

Without the help of WVS donations, we wouldn’t be able to tell so many “happy ending” stories.

WVS has given us their support also by providing us valuable information and consultation when ever we have needed it. Also we have had the pleasure of receiving some volunteers through WVS, who have helped us with our animals, in so many ways.

Thank you WVS for your support in the past years, and hopefully years to come!

Joeri says goodbye
2010-06-06
After many years of work for the shelter our volunteer Joeri has left us now to live in Finland with his girlfriend.
We'd like to thank him in the name of the animals for all the effort he put
into Animal Care Samos and we wish him all the best for his future!

First transport 2010 has gone well.
2010-03-12

The first transport of 2010 went well !
The duration of a transport takes about 10 to 11 days. It depends on several circumstances which can not easily be predicted. Just like the volunteers Tom & Jan experienced during their transport of 31 dogs last month. Their trip to Samos and back took them 11 days because of a 24hrs-strike in Greece. They had to wait at Samos for another day, but fortunately, at last, they were able to leave Samos. On the day of departure they went to the dogshelter at 4 a.m. All the dogs were gathered and prepared for the trip to freedom, because the ferryboat was already leaving at 6 a.m. Due to this early point of time they had to stay overnight on the mainland of Greece. The ferryboat to Italy was just leaving the next morning. Tom and Jan were not staying in a hotel or something like that, but they stayed with the 31 dogs. They stopped at a lonely little beach where they could walk the dogs. It takes more than 3,5 hours to walk and feed all the 31 dogs and giving them water as well. Tom and Jan worked very hard to make it as easy as possible for the dogs, they walked the dogs a lot of miles. After a little selfmade meal, it was ‘bed’time: Jan slept in the van and Tom slept in a little tent on the beach. The first destination was at Klaus and Anita’s, where some of the lucky dogs could already leave the van. After this stop, the rest of the dogs were brought to their destinations (variuos dogshelters in Germany and Holland). After a four days’ journey Tom and Jan were exhausted but, of course, very satisfied that the journey went well. Right now, Tom and Jan are home again and, that’s why they did it, the dogs are very close to their new homes!
